Who Was Craig Cary?
Born on May 13, 1954, Professor Craig Cary tragically died on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the age of 70.
Craig was a beloved husband to Amy Hacker and a cherished father and father-in-law to Robin & Amos and Ky & Jeane.
As an eminent figure in scientific studies, Professor Cary was a well-known microbial ecologist and held the position of Professor at the University of Waikato’s School of Science.
Craig earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1976. He pursued a Master of Science (MSc) from San Diego State University in 1982. He then earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1989.
After completing his doctoral studies, he worked on postdoctoral research at Oregon State University. In 1994, he joined the University of Delaware before moving to New Zealand in 2004. His research spanned over 40 years, concentrating on studying microbial life in extreme environments. This included 29 deep-sea expeditions to hydrothermal vents and 18 seasons in Antarctica.
He made significant contributions, conducting more than 45 dives in research submersibles and undertaking 22 deployments to explore microbial life in polar deserts. These deserts hold the acknowledgment for being the coldest and driest places on Earth. Additionally, he studied high-temperature soils on the summit of Mt. Erebus, the southernmost active volcano on the planet.
Craig Cary led a team at the University of Waikato’s International Centre for Terrestrial Antarctic Research (ICTAR). At the time of his passing, he held the position of Assistant Vice Chancellor at the University of Waikato.
