Who is Michelle Hernandez?

Michelle Hernandez, 44, stands accused of killing her 47-year-old boyfriend, Alejandro Santos, who stumbled out of their West 147th Street apartment on Sunday afternoon, knocking on neighbors’ doors while bleeding from wounds to his chest and arm.

According to prosecutors, Santos identified Hernandez as his alleged attacker before succumbing to his injuries.

Reportedly, Santos told a neighbor who opened their door, “She stabbed me,” before expressing concern about passing out and collapsing. Authorities recorded this information in a complaint lodged at Manhattan criminal court.

After the incident, Hernandez exited the apartment and informed neighbors that Santos had been stabbed, even disclosing the location of the knife. Allegedly, she then knelt beside the victim and whispered in his ear, urging him not to disclose her involvement to avoid arrest.

Doctors hurried Santos to Harlem Hospital, where they declared him deceased.

Police Investigation

During questioning by police, Hernandez provided inconsistent information regarding the events. However, she maintained that Santos had inflicted the wounds upon himself, contradicting Santos’ dying declaration to their neighbor.

Hernandez exhibited a cut on her hand consistent with potential knife use. Additionally, authorities recovered security camera footage and a pair of bloodied knives from the apartment.

Authorities formally charged Hernandez on Monday, attributing a “domestic dispute” as the catalyst for the stabbing.

The couple had initially met several years ago while residing in a shelter together, eventually moving in together around two years before the incident.

In court proceedings, it came to light that the couple had experienced a previous incident where Hernandez threatened to jump out of a window, leading to a 911 call.

Hernandez has a documented history of substance abuse and violent behavior. Past incidents include kicking a pregnant woman in the stomach during a shelter altercation and breaking another resident’s arm in 2017. She previously received a two-year probationary sentence and served 10 months in jail.

Hernandez remains in custody without bail and is set to appear in court on May 22nd.
